Does Medicare Cover a Walk-In Tub?

Currently, Medicare offers assistance for Durable Medical Equipment (DME) only. Walk-in tubs are not considered DMEs and are not covered under Medicare. Although in rare instances, a walk-in tub may be part of a written prescription for a medical diagnosis, most likely there would be only reimbursement in these cases. There is no guarantee Medicare will assist with or pay for the purchase of a walk-in tub.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid may be more likely to provide financial assistance for the purchase and installation of a walk-in tub. However, this is determined on a state-by-state basis and there are specific rules on the policy for assistance. We encourage you to carefully review state guidelines prior to purchasing your bath, if you seek coverage or reimbursement.

U.S. Department of Agriculture

In certain situations, the USDA may pay for walk-in tubs to support elderly, low income, and residents of rural areas to enable aging in the home. For cases where this applies, grants can be used for home and safety improvements including the addition of a walk-in tub. For information contact usda.gov

Veteran Program

The Home Improvements Structural Alterations (HISA) program states veterans with service-connected disabilities or veterans with non-service-connected disabilities may receive assistance for a home improvement necessary for the continuation of treatment or for disability access to the home and essential lavatory and sanitary facilities. The HISA doesn’t cover assistance for a spa, hot tub, or Jacuzzi, but may on a case by case basis. For more information, contact a Veteran Affairs representative or visit HISA.

Tax Deductibility

When a walk-in tub is purchased for medical safety reasons, it may be considered a medical expense and the materials and installation may be tax deductible as a Medical and Dental Expense. If you are caring for an elderly parent in your home and make a home modification that includes the addition of a walk-in tub, you may be able to claim the expense under the Dependent Care Tax Credit. Be sure to consult with your accountant or tax professional for additional details before making a decision.
